Dear Mr. McGaha:
Further reference is made to your letter of 9 July 1951, herewith returned.
The records sow that Isaac Magaha, born in Louden County, Virginia, aged 25 years, enlisted 26 November 1837 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was honorably discharged 26 November 1840 at Fort Brooke, East Florida, a private, Company D, 6th Regiment of Infantry. Captain William Hoffman commanded that company from 1 June 1838 to 25 April 1840, when he went on furlough and rejoined and resumed command 24 October 1840.
The records also show that John Magaha, private, Company B, 3d Battalion Florida Cavalry, which subsequently became Company D, 15th Regiment Confederate Cavalry (also known as the 1st Regiment Alabama and Florida Cavalry), Confederate States Army, enlisted 2 June 1864 at Milton, Florida. The company muster roll for May and June 1864, dated 30 June 1864, last on file, shows him present.
His name appears on a receipt roll for clothing issued 28 August 1864.
He was surrendered 4 May 1865 at Citronelle, Alabama, by Lieutenent General R. Taylor, C. S. A., and was paroled 14 May 1865 at Gainesville, Florida. His place of residence at that time is shown as St. (unreadable) Florida.
The records of the Confederate States Army on file are of a strictly military character rarely showing any items of personal or family history and no information has been found in this office concerning the parents of John Magaha.
