bullet  Birth Notes:

Lived up to his nick-name of Good Time Charlie-had a tavern with his brother Fred Toll (actually Sobieski Toll)-across the street from the Police Station in Hawthorne,NJ in the late 1930's or so, when Uncle Fred wasn"t around everything was on the house-they were not in business very long. Was friendly with all the local politicians and a buddy to all. Worked for the WPA-Works Progress Administration-Pres.FDRoosevelts project. I remember in the early 1940s going to work with him when they were building a lookout post on top of the water tank on the mountain in Hawthorne which you could see when standing in the middle of South Ave and looking to the West. This of course was a lookout station to observe the New York skyline for air raid attack during Worl d War 2. There were barracks with about fifty soldiers, 2 search lights and 2 anti aircraft guns about 500 yards to the right of that lookout post. I remember vividly talking to a soldier from Texas at that site. Uncle Charles was quite the joker-had a coil/battery from a Model A or T attached under o wooden chair with a hidden button to activate same which were attached to 2 nails in the seat of the chair. At the right cue I was to push the button thereby delivering a helluva jolt to the occupants backside. On one such occasion the occupant happened to be Bob Maitland, the mayor of Hawthorne at the time, who I was told to tell " you are a good old son of a bitch", which of course I dutifully did. This was in the finished basement at 178 South Ave,Hawthorne,NJ-kind of like a den of today for parties, etc. I was born in that house,my Grandfather Wm. Toll died there and lay in state in the living room.We had boarders to make ends meet as well as help in the war effort-I recall a Mr.Lennon and a Mrs.Reitz with her son Billy,Islept on the floor on a mattress. Interesting times-glad I remember them.
